Tax Manager - Newly Created Position – Remote but MUST live in the Denver or surrounding areas (Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, etc.)

Privately owned, Denver based oil and gas company seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead and develop its internal tax function. This is a newly created position resulting from the Company’s decision to transition most of its tax work from an outsourced model to an internally managed function.

This is a hands-on role that includes a significant number of partnerships, S corporations, and individuals. The company has both operated and non-operated oil and gas holdings across multiple states.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical tax expertise with the ability to work independently, develop effective processes, and serve as the Company’s primary internal tax resource.

RESPONSIBILIES OF THE TAX MANAGER

Transition to an Internal Tax Function

  • Lead the transition of tax responsibilities from the Company’s outside tax providers to an internally managed tax function.
  • Develop tax processes, procedures, controls, documentation, and compliance calendars.
  • Become the Company’s primary internal resource for federal, state, and local income tax matters.

Partnership, S Corporation, Individual & Multi-State Taxation

  • Manage federal and multi-state tax compliance for the Company and its related entities.
  • Preparation and review of federal and state tax returns, extensions, estimated payments, and related filings.
  • Monitor changes in federal and state tax laws and evaluate their impact on the Company and its owners.

Oil & Gas Taxation

  • Ensure appropriate tax treatment of oil and gas revenues, expenses, acquisitions, dispositions, and capital expenditures.
  • Address industry-specific tax matters including intangible drilling costs, depletion, depreciation, leasehold costs, and other oil and gas tax considerations.

Tax Planning & Strategy

  • Identify tax planning opportunities and recommend strategies to improve tax efficiency.
  • Assist management and ownership with tax planning involving pass-through entities.
  • Research and provide guidance regarding technical tax issues affecting the Company.

Tax Accounting, Compliance & Reporting

  • Work closely with accounting and reconcile tax accounts and analyze book-to-tax differences.
  • Develop schedules and supporting documentation required for tax compliance and planning.
  • Manage federal and state tax notices, examinations, inquiries, and information requests.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation supporting the Company’s tax positions.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE TAX MANAGER

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Master’s degree in taxation or LLM in Taxation preferred.
  • CPA.
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting and/or a corporate tax environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal and state income taxation.
  • Significant experience with partnership, S corporation, and individual taxation compliance and research.
  • Strong understanding of pass-through entities, partnership allocations, and Schedules K-1.
  • Some oil and gas industry tax experience highly preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter.
  • Highest level of honesty and integrity.

Target salary range: $140,000 – $160,000+ DOE. PTO, insurance, 401K, continuing education, and more!
